Course Summary
First, we used the web. Now, we are the web. Tools for communication, publishing, and development have now become so freely available that barriers to entry on the web are down. The information superhighway is no longer a toll road and there’s an on ramp every half mile. When you can create a web service overnight on open source software, post goods for sale for free on Craigslist, make free phone calls on Skype, and become your own online publisher with a blog and actually make money, the model of the web as a resource gets replaced by the web as a platform. It will empower those who understand the tools, and leaving behind those who don’t.
What does this mean for business? It means there are new models and new opportunities. “Closed” business models will not work anymore. Witness AOL’s decision to stop charging for access and become completely advertising supported. Smart move or disaster? Does defensibility even exist anymore? What does this mean for your career? Can a blog get you fired? Can a blog get you hired? Should you participate in social networks and how can you use them to network with people you never would have had access to otherwise?
Goals
- To understand how technology is disrupting industries, particularly media and marketing, and the nature of the business opportunities created by disruption.
- To use online tools to stay informed about industry news and insights through a combination of first person sources and mainstream media
- To maintain an online presence that reflects positively about you and describes your capabilities and interests.
- To interact and develop relationships with likeminded professionals through their online presence.
- To think about the business and marketing of online and digital products you use everyday, because they are key products in major industries that you may need to understand in the corporate world.
